UK Commercial Sauna: Güs Wellness, Sheffield
Güs Wellness is one of the most exciting new wellness venues to open in the north of England. Located in the heart of Sheffield city centre at 34 Cambridge Street, the venue delivers an urban thermal wellness experience centred on authentic Finnish-grade heat, ice contrast therapy, and the community-driven ritual of guided Aufguss and Saunagus sessions. When the team behind Güs set out to build a sauna worthy of their vision, they turned to Finnmark Sauna to supply the design expertise, materials, and equipment to bring it to life. The result is a large-format, commercial-grade sauna installation that is as technically accomplished as it is visually striking. Finnmark's scope covered the main 24-person sauna; Güs also operates a second 12-person sauna on the top floor, offering guests a more intimate setting with views across the city.
This project stands out in Finnmark's portfolio not just for its scale, but for the thought and precision that went into every specification decision. A 26kW commercial heater capable of serving a 24-person sauna, a full suite of architectural sauna lighting from SAAS, matched Thermo Radiata Pine surfaces throughout, and a bespoke heater guard and ceiling protection detail; this was a project where every component was chosen to perform at the highest level, day after day, under the pressures of commercial use.

About Güs Wellness
Güs Wellness was conceived as a destination for urban thermal recovery, bringing a practice long established in Denmark, Finland, and the wider Nordic world to the centre of one of England's most vibrant cities. Situated in Sheffield's city centre, the venue offers two saunas, four ice baths ranging from 3 to 12°C, private changing facilities, rest areas, and a café serving specialty coffee from Dark Woods alongside locally baked goods.
The centrepiece of the experience is the large 24-person Finnish-grade sauna, which Finnmark Sauna designed and supplied in full. Güs also operates a second 12-person sauna on the top floor, offering guests a more intimate setting with city views. Together, the two spaces give the venue real flexibility in how it programmes sessions and manages guest flow across the day.
Güs runs both free-flow sessions, where guests move between the heat and cold at their own pace, and guided Saunagus sessions led by a trained Sauna Master; a structured, sensory ritual combining progressively increasing heat rounds with breath work, aromatherapy, and curated music. This Aufguss-inspired format demands a sauna that can perform at high capacity repeatedly throughout the day, which shaped every element of the specification Finnmark provided for the main 24-person room.

The Heater: Helo Magma 26kW
For a commercial sauna serving up to 24 bathers at a time and operating through a full programme of guided and free-flow sessions each day, heater selection is the most critical decision in the entire build. Under-specification here means the sauna never reaches optimal temperature, the löyly (steam) is weak, and the experience falls short. At Güs, we specified the Helo Magma 26kW, a high-output commercial electric sauna heater from one of Finland's most respected manufacturers.
Helo is a Finnish brand with decades of heritage in commercial sauna equipment, and the Magma series represents their offering for large-volume, high-frequency applications. At 26kW, the Magma can heat a substantial sauna room rapidly and maintain a consistent, stable temperature even as multiple bathers enter and leave throughout the session. This is particularly important at Güs, where guided Saunagus ceremonies involve heat being progressively intensified across three rounds, with the Sauna Master adding water and essential oils to the heater at structured intervals to produce the characteristic löyly that defines the experience.
The Magma's large stone capacity is central to its performance in this setting. A high mass of sauna stones absorbs heat steadily during the warm-up phase and releases it evenly and consistently when water is added. In a guided session where the Sauna Master is throwing multiple ladles of water over the course of ten to fifteen minutes per round, this thermal mass ensures the steam production remains generous and even rather than peaking and dropping off rapidly. The result is the kind of full, enveloping löyly that guests at Güs describe as the centrepiece of the experience.
A heater shield was installed above the Magma to protect the ceiling cladding immediately above the unit. This is an important detail in any high-output commercial installation: without adequate protection, the intense heat rising directly from a 26kW unit over thousands of operating hours can discolour or degrade the timber overhead. The shield deflects and disperses this rising heat, protecting the cladding and maintaining the aesthetic integrity of the sauna interior for the long term.

Sauna Controller: Helo Elite Free
The Helo Elite Free controller was specified to manage the Magma heater at Güs. The Elite Free is a professional-grade digital controller designed for commercial environments, offering precise temperature management, programmable heating schedules, and safety features appropriate for a venue managing multiple sessions per day across a varied schedule.
For Güs, the ability to programme heating schedules in advance is a practical necessity. The venue runs a structured timetable of free-flow and guided sessions, and the 24-person sauna needs to be at optimal temperature reliably at the start of each one. The Elite Free allows the team to set the sauna to begin heating ahead of each session automatically, ensuring consistency without requiring manual intervention each time.

Timber Selection: Thermo Radiata Pine 140
Thermo Radiata Pine was selected for both the wall cladding and bench surfaces throughout the 24-person sauna, using a 140mm profile board across all applications. This consistent material choice creates a unified, cohesive interior with a warm, naturally contemporary aesthetic that aligns with the venue's broader design language.
Thermo Radiata Pine is produced through thermal modification, a process in which Radiata Pine is subjected to sustained high temperatures in a controlled, oxygen-free environment. This heat treatment fundamentally alters the timber's cellular structure, improving its dimensional stability and moisture resistance well beyond that of untreated pine, while giving it a warm, medium-brown tone and a finely textured surface. No chemicals or preservatives are involved; the modification is achieved entirely through heat and steam.
For a commercial sauna that operates across multiple sessions daily, timber performance under repeated heating and cooling cycles is paramount. Thermo Radiata Pine's modified structure significantly reduces the risks of warping, cracking, or resin exudation, making it far better suited to the rigours of commercial use than standard pine. Its low thermal conductivity also ensures that bench surfaces remain comfortable to sit and lie on, even at high operating temperatures, a non-negotiable requirement for any sauna timber.
The 140mm board profile was chosen to create a clean, architectural look with fewer visible joints along the walls. Wider boards give a sense of calm and considered simplicity to the interior, allowing the natural grain and warm tonal variation of the Thermo Radiata to breathe. In a large commercial sauna serving 24 people, the interior needs to feel spacious and ordered rather than busy. Sauna Lighting: A Layered Architectural Scheme
The lighting scheme at Güs is one of the most detailed and considered elements of the entire installation. Rather than a single light type positioned for basic visibility, the 24-person sauna features a fully layered architectural lighting design using multiple SAAS fixture types, each fulfilling a specific role within the space. The result is a sauna interior that feels warm, intentional, and distinctly premium, with light playing a central role in shaping the atmosphere of the experience.
All lighting was sourced from SAAS, a specialist Finnish manufacturer whose products are engineered specifically for the extreme heat and humidity conditions inside a sauna. Browse our full range of sauna lighting to explore what is available for your own project.
SAAS Viiva Highline Strip Lights
SAAS Viiva Highline strip lights are installed along the lips of all benches throughout the sauna. Positioned to face downward and forward from the front edge of each bench level, they cast a soft, warm wash of light across the floor and lower surfaces of the room without shining directly into the eyes of bathers seated or lying on the benches above. The Viiva Highline's slim, linear form integrates cleanly into the bench profile, becoming almost invisible during the day and emerging as a defining element of the atmosphere when the room is in use.
SAAS ID+ Shrouded Ceiling Spotlights
Along the sides of the ceiling, SAAS ID+ shrouded spotlights provide directional light that is focused and controlled by their shrouded design. The shrouding prevents direct glare in the relaxed environment of a sauna session, while still delivering enough light to the peripheral areas of the room to ensure safety and comfort. Positioned along the sides rather than the centre of the ceiling, these fixtures anchor the architectural design of the space.
SAAS ID Full Spotlights
Down the central walkway, SAAS ID full spotlights provide the primary navigational and practical lighting for the space. In a 24-person commercial sauna with a central walkway used by the Sauna Master during guided sessions, consistent, reliable light along this axis is a safety and operational requirement.
SAAS Hot Ones
Above the heater, SAAS Hot Ones fixtures provide targeted illumination of the heater zone. During a guided Saunagus session at Güs, the heater and the Sauna Master working at it are the focal point of the room. The SAAS Hot Ones are rated for the most extreme heat conditions within a sauna interior, positioned directly above the heater, where temperatures are highest. By illuminating this zone specifically, the lighting design directs the attention of bathers toward the ritual moment when water is added to the stones and the steam rises, heightening the drama and intentionality of the guided experience.
Bespoke Details: Heater Guard and Ceiling Protection
Custom Thermo Radiata Pine Heater Guard
A custom heater guard was designed and manufactured in Thermo Radiata Pine to match the cladding and bench material throughout the sauna. By fabricating the guard in the same Thermo Radiata Pine used throughout the interior, the guard integrates seamlessly into the room rather than appearing as a functional afterthought. It reads as part of the architecture of the sauna, maintaining the clean, unified aesthetic of the space.
Custom heater guards of this kind are one of the details that define a properly specified commercial installation. A standard off-the-shelf guard in a different material or finish would stand out in a premium venue like Güs; a bespoke guard in matching timber does not. This is the level of consideration that Finnmark brings to every commercial project.
Heater Shield Above the Heater
A heater shield was installed above the Helo Magma to protect the ceiling cladding from the sustained intense heat rising directly from the unit. At 26kW, the Magma generates significant heat output, and in a commercial sauna operating multiple sessions per day, the cumulative thermal stress on the ceiling area immediately above the heater would, without protection, risk discolouration and degradation of the cladding over time. The shield disperses this rising heat laterally before it reaches the ceiling, preserving both the appearance and the integrity of the timber above.
Güs Wellness and the Rise of Commercial Sauna Culture in the UK
The Güs Wellness project is part of a broader shift in the UK's relationship with sauna culture. Until recently, the sauna in Britain was largely associated with health clubs and leisure centres, functional rather than experiential, and rarely given the same architectural or cultural significance it commands in Denmark, Finland, or the wider Nordic world. That is changing rapidly, driven in part by the growing popularity of Aufguss and Saunagus ceremonies, the wellness community's embrace of contrast therapy, and a generation of entrepreneurs who have experienced authentic sauna culture in Europe and want to bring it home.
Güs is one of the finest examples of this new wave of dedicated urban sauna venues in the UK. Its design, programming, and commitment to authentic practice set a high standard, and the specification of the 24-person sauna that Finnmark supplied had to match that ambition. A 26kW Helo Magma producing consistent, generous löyly; Thermo Radiata Pine surfaces that feel and look the part after hundreds of sessions; a lighting scheme that shapes the atmosphere of every guided ceremony; and bespoke details that show the care taken at every stage. This is what a premium commercial sauna installation looks like.
Güs Wellness is open seven days a week, with sessions bookable directly via the Güs website (https://www.guswellness.com/book-now). Free-flow slots are available, with the options being 45 minutes and 90 minutes, along with guided Saunagus ceremonies running at set times throughout the week. The venue is located at 34 Cambridge Street, Sheffield city centre, S1 4HP. Experiencing a sauna in person is always the best way to understand what separates a well-built, properly specified installation from an ordinary one. The heat, the quality of the steam, the comfort of the benches, the atmosphere created by the lighting; none of it translates fully until you are sitting in the room itself. Güs offers exactly the kind of environment where all of those details come together, and we are proud to have played a part in making it what it is.
