Authentic sauna heaters require suitable stones onto which water is poured to create a soft steam. Commonly used sauna stones are olivine diabase and vulcanite stones, which are both highly durable in hot and humid environments of the sauna. Decorative sauna stones can also be used at the top of the sauna heater.

These stones are prized for their heat retention and ability to produce soft, gentle steam, making them ideal for creating a relaxing sauna experience.
Vulcanite is a premium, odourless igneous rock, known for its durability and suitability for saunas. The stones are dark-coloured and have a high metal content, allowing the stones to retain heat exceptionally well. They are perfect for sauna heaters used multiple times a week, offering excellent performance and longevity.
The choice depends on your needs. Vulcanite stones are darker and more durable, suited for frequent use, while Olivine Diabase stones provide a soft, gentle steam for a relaxing sauna session at a slightly lower price point.
The size of stones you need depends on your sauna heater model. Typically, sauna stones come in two sizes: 5-10 cm and 10-15 cm. Generally, the smaller size is suitable for most electric heaters and the larger rocks for wood-burning heaters. However, there are exceptions to this. Check the product description of your heater to determine the recommended stone size and type.
It’s recommended to inspect your sauna stones regularly, replacing any that show signs of cracking or wear. You can check our guides on when and how to correctly arrange your sauna stones when you scroll up on this page.
