Four simple steps to sauna wellness

Heat

Set your intention. This isn't about checking a box on your wellness to-do list. Light flows through cedar walls differently when you approach with presence rather than rushing through a routine. Hydrate well beforehand. Bring a towel and water bottle inside. Consider what you're bringing into this space—gratitude, stress, curiosity, fatigue. Name it, then let the heat do its work. This preparation matters. The ritual begins before you open the door.

Steam

Allow your body to warm gradually. Feel the heat settle into your muscles. Your heart rate begins to rise gently. Blood vessels dilate. Circulation improves. This isn't the moment for productivity—resist the urge to scroll through your phone. Close your eyes. Notice your breath naturally deepening as your body adapts to the warmth. Some days, ten minutes is enough. That's perfectly valid. Listen to what your body needs

Cool

This is where transformation happens—if your body is ready for it. Your heart rate elevated, circulation optimised, mind beginning to drift into that meditative space between thinking and being. The Finns call this state löyly—the spirit of the sauna, the moment when heat and steam and breath converge into something transcendent. It's what you've been building towards. If you feel light-headed or uncomfortable, exit now. There's no prize for endurance. Respect your limits.

Rest

Cool slowly. Some prefer a cold shower or plunge pool. Others simply step outside and breathe winter air. Let your body guide you towards what feels right. Hydrate mindfully—mineral-rich water, herbal tea, something that replenishes. Your body has worked hard. Give it what it needs to recover properly. Notice how different you feel: looser, lighter, more yourself. That's the practice working. That's why you return.
