Description
The STEP profile gives alder sauna cladding a bold, angular character, with broad grooves that cast strong shadow lines across a feature wall or a full sauna interior. Each tongue and groove board is 27 mm thick and 64 mm wide, with an effective width of 56 mm once fitted, and packs contain four boards in a choice of 2100 mm or 2400 mm lengths. Fitted vertically, the finely repeating profile helps a room feel wider; run horizontally, it makes the space feel taller. Alder is a popular timber for traditional saunas, light brown with warm pink undertones, and it stays comfortable to the touch in high heat while resisting twisting and warping. The profile also combines well with our other cladding profiles where a contrast of textures is wanted.

Timber
Alder is a popular choice in traditional saunas thanks to its natural qualities and low risk of twisting and warping. It has a light brown colour with warm pink undertones, and a subtle scent that resembles freshly cut hay, which many find pleasant in the sauna. Alder does not overheat and has water-repellent properties, so it performs well in hot and humid environments. As a natural product, the timber shows some colour variation between packs and batches.
Profile
STEP is a decorative profile with broad grooves for an angular, modern look. Its considerable depth creates a striking texture on feature walls, which lighting can enhance by casting contrasting shadows in the wells between the raised sections. The profile can be installed vertically to help a room feel wider or horizontally to make it feel taller, and it combines well with our other timber profiles to add contrast and detail. It is also suitable for interior finishes beyond the sauna.
Quality & Wastage
Our alder sauna timber is A-grade: durable, knot free and with a low risk of splintering. We recommend a wastage allowance of 15%, which also covers the small risk of damage in transit. Contact us if you are unsure how much you need for your sauna build.
Installation & Care
The tongue and groove boards are straightforward to fit and well suited to a DIY sauna build. An Installation and Maintenance Guide is available under the Downloadable Files tab on this page.
Ordering & Delivery
Timber orders are shipped on a palletised service due to their size, and may require a kerbside drop. Shipping costs are calculated at checkout and vary between UK Mainland, Highland and Island postcodes. We usually ship lengths of up to 2400 mm; longer lengths cost significantly more to send. If we stock a longer board than you need, our cutting service can cut it to your required length for a small fee, with the off-cut added to the pallet. For longer lengths or the cutting service, contact our team on +44 (0) 20 8050 2895 or support@finnmarksauna.com.
