Description
Our alder STS4 cladding brings a strong, contemporary rhythm to sauna walls and ceilings, with slim, angular grooves and a 4 mm gap between boards that gives the profile its name. The boards are 15 mm thick and 140 mm wide with a 130 mm effective width, supplied in packs of six and in 2100 mm or 2400 mm lengths. Alder is a traditional sauna timber with a light brown colour warmed by pink undertones and a subtle scent reminiscent of freshly cut hay; it resists twisting and warping, does not overheat and naturally repels water, so it is well suited to a hot, humid room. We recommend treating the boards with paraffin oil, which slightly deepens the colour of the wood.

Timber
Alder is a popular choice in traditional saunas thanks to its natural qualities and low risk of twisting and warping. It has a beautiful light brown colour with warm pink undertones, and a subtle scent resembling freshly cut hay that many find pleasant in the sauna. Alder does not overheat and has water-repellent properties, making it well suited to hot and humid environments.
Profile
The STS4 profile takes its name from the 4 mm gap between each board. Its slim, angular grooves suit a modern sauna where a symmetrical, strong aesthetic is wanted, and the profile is a popular choice in contemporary builds. STS4 boards can be combined with other cladding profiles to create a unique, modern aesthetic in the sauna or other interiors.
Quality & Wastage
This is A-grade timber, durable and knot-free with a low risk of splintering. We recommend a wastage allowance of 15% for alder cladding, which also covers the risk of minor damage in transit. As a natural product, timber shows some colour variation between packs and batches, and general sauna wood grading standards apply; grading rules for each timber type are published on our website. Contact us if you are unsure how much you need for your build.
Installation & Care
An Installation and Maintenance Guide for our sauna wood cladding is available under the Downloadable Files tab. The boards are straightforward to fit, which makes them well suited to DIY sauna projects. We recommend treating the wood with paraffin oil, which slightly deepens its colour. Please note that lifestyle images are for representation only; the finished look varies with the width and placement of the cladding.
