Description
This traditional Finnish sauna whisk, or vihta, is made entirely by hand from birch twigs and nettle, for bathers who would like to try something a little different. Nettle naturally stimulates the skin and is traditionally said to encourage circulation. Each whisk is tied with thin natural linen string and dried in a well-ventilated barn, then soaked before use to bring the leaves back to life. Whisking is an ancient bathing tradition, highly regarded throughout Finland for the incomparably clean feeling it gives, especially when combined with a cold plunge. Each vihta lasts one or two sessions, after which it can be composted. Please note this is an end-of-line clearance item: it remains suitable for use but may not be as fresh as our regular range, and it is sold without returns or refunds.

Preparing the whisk
Remove the packaging and immerse the whisk in cold water for 30 minutes. Let it then sit in warm (not hot) water for a further 5 minutes. Give the whisk its own bucket of fresh water in the sauna; the water infused by the branches works well ladled onto the stones and lends the room a pleasant scent.
Using the whisk
Start whisking once your skin has warmed up nicely, working gently over yourself or your fellow sauna bathers. Dipping the vihta regularly into cold water provides cool, refreshing relief during the bath, particularly when sauna bathing is combined with a cold plunge. Some Finns like to soften the rehydrated leaves on the hot sauna stones before soaking them again in cold water; take care with this approach to avoid burning or scalding, and keep dried leaves well away from the firebox or heating elements.
Care and reuse
After the sauna, rinse the whisk lightly and hang it in a cool, dry place. It can be reused following the same preparation. A vihta is intended for one or two sessions, after which it should be disposed of or composted.
