Our Oak sauna whisk, or vihta, is the robust choice: a favourite of experienced sauna bathers who prefer vigorous whisking and hot steam temperatures. The scent of oak leaves is traditionally described as calming, with a reputation for anti-inflammatory and stress-relieving qualities. Like all our whisks, it is made in summer, usually until Midsummer, when the leaves are richest in essential oils; the cut twigs are bound with thin natural linen string and dried in a well-ventilated barn. Whisking is an ancient Finnish hygiene tradition, noted for the incomparable clean feeling it creates, especially when combined with a cold plunge. Soak the whisk before use, and ladle the infused soaking water over the stones for a pleasantly scented löyly. Please note this is an end-of-line clearance item: it remains suitable for use but may not be as fresh as our regular range, and clearance whisks cannot be returned or refunded.

Preparing the whisk
Remove the packaging and soak the whisk before going to the sauna. Immerse it first in cold water for 30 minutes, then let it sit carefully in warm (not hot) water for a further 5 minutes. Put fresh water in the sauna bucket for the whisk; the water infused by its branches works well for sauna steam and gives the sauna a pleasant scent.
Using the whisk
Begin once your skin has warmed up nicely, gently whisking yourself or your fellow sauna goers. A whisk dipped regularly into cold water gives cool, refreshing relief, and the clean feeling it creates is especially noted when sauna bathing and whisking are combined with a cold plunge. Some Finns like to soften the rehydrated leaves on the hot sauna stones before soaking them again in cold water; take caution with this approach to avoid burning or scalding, and keep dried leaves well away from the firebox or heating elements.
Care and reuse
After the sauna, lightly rinse the whisk and hang it in a cool, dry place. It can be reused by following the same instructions; a vihta is good for one or two uses, after which it should be disposed of or composted.
