Choosing Your Sauna Cladding

Your choice of cladding depends on your personal preference, space, and desired visual impact. Whether you're looking to create a traditional or modern aesthetic, our sauna wood cladding is designed to meet all your interior and exterior needs.

Internal sauna cladding has a large impact on how your sauna room will look, smell and feel, while external cladding ensures a pleasant overall appearance along with resistance to outside influences including harsh weather and destructive wildlife. We offer various cladding widths which can be selected to perfectly fit the size and style of your sauna. Your cladding choice will depend on the sauna space, perspective and visual interest.

Choosing The Right Timber Species & Profile For Your Project

Choosing your panels is all about your personal preference. Finnmark provides a range of styles and sauna wood species to fit the atmosphere and interior you wish to create. When it comes to timber cladding thickness it is imperative to only use cladding boards that are at least 14mm thick. It’s the minimum thickness allowed by law in Finland, and for good reason: cladding thinner than this will invariably warp and become damaged within the sauna’s harsh environment.

The sauna bench wood must be resilient and approx. 28mm thick. Our sauna bench timber comes in SHP-profile.

As for the width of your sauna timber, Finnmark primarily supplies four sizes for the cladding: 90mm, 120mm, 140mm, and 160mm. The sauna bench wood is available in widths from 20mm up to 160mm.

What types of wood are available for sauna cladding and trims?

Finnmark offers a variety of sauna woods, including Aspen, Thermo Aspen, Alder, Thermo Alder, Thermo Spruce, Thermo Pine, Thermo Radiata Pine, Dark Thermo Alder and Thermo Magnolia. Each wood type offers unique aesthetic and durability benefits.

What is the advantage of thermo-treated wood for saunas?

Thermo-treated wood is heat-treated to enhance its dimensional stability, durability, and resistance to moisture. This makes it perfect for sauna environments, where humidity and high temperatures can cause damage to certain timber species.

Can I use Finnmark’s sauna wood for DIY projects?

Yes, Finnmark’s sauna woods, trims, and bench kits are ideal for DIY sauna installations. Our collection offers a wide range of sizes and styles that can be easily adapted to your design needs.

How do I maintain my sauna wood?

Sauna wood can be easily maintained with regular cleaning and the use of specially designed sauna cleaning products. We recommend using sauna-safe paraffin oil and treatments to keep the wood looking its best.

Do you offer custom sauna wood options?

If you have a specific wood type or design in mind, our specialists can work with you to find the perfect match for your sauna.

How do I install my sauna wall cladding?

- Ensure the sauna framework is insulated and has proper vapour barriers.

- Attach ventilation battens – Fix them horizontally to create airflow behind the cladding.

- Install cladding panels – Start from the bottom, fixing each panel with hidden nails or clips. Stainless steel brad nails or staples are ideal as they provide the best durability in the extreme heat and humidity of the sauna environment.

- Allow for expansion – Leave small gaps to accommodate wood movement due to heat and humidity.

- Finish with sauna treatment – Use sauna-safe paraffin oil to enhance durability.
